I played outside!
My first ever outdoor gig – and it was sunny. I never thought I’d be so lucky. When I went into the big back yard it was held in I didn’t expect it, it was cosy but there were quite a lot of people there. Not many were really enjoying the bands though (Kieran’s brother put it best when he said one bands name must be “Mid Life Crisis”) so I didn’t know how we’d go down. But yes, we chatted with the awesome people that came from ages to see us – YAWA girls Rachie and Lou and YAWA dudes Kane and Caleb (How biblical does that sound?) – Kane was all labcoated up and everything.
We eventually took to the stage and after a brief line check (When you don’t have time for a soundcheck they just check each instrument and hope for the best) we started. Everyone that was sitting down in other places came over to watch and loads of people stood up. Of all the bands that played, we got the biggest reaction out of the crowd.
I started off by telling the Scene Kids and Indie Kids to move in closer, which Zak got annoyed at – “Mate, people don’t come to gigs to have the piss taken out of them!” But to be honest if some random frontman called me a long haired gay I’d be laughing my head off. Everyone I pointed out and called a Scene kid laughed and their mates laughed even more. I think insulting each other is an intrinsic part of British culture.
Anyway, the gig unfolded and it entailed me jumping off stage, taking off my shoes, jumping on a bouncy castle whilst rapping I am the Navigator, putting my shoes back on, Jumping onto a table on the second stage that wasn’t being used, the table collapsing, me falling off in a less-than-rockstarish manner (we missed those events on the video camera, doh! >< Eamon got some ace footage of the show though!) and a whole host of fun banter with the crowd between songs. One girl kept shouting “Big Fish Little Fish Cardboard Fish”, then eventually came out in a cardboard box with “Cardboard fish” written on it. Awesome.
The sound was absolutely terrible, but the gig was amazing. LOADS of people told me they really enjoyed it afterwards, we sold a bunch of CDs and T-shirts and I had an awesome time.
Though when it came to packing away, one of the other bands had nicked my single tier keyboard stand and a lead of mine, so that’s about £50 I’ll have to fork out =/ I really hate losing gear. That and the terrible sound are the only things stopping the night from being 8/10.
12 story fall!
Kieran played an acoustic set soon after YAWA finished and it was ace! I went around gathering up people to watch him, got quite a few too since they all remembered me from YAWA’s set
Kieran’s voice is gorgeous, it was so nice; YAWA, Kieran’s family, YAWA’s hardcore fans and the newly recruited fans all sitting around the little stage listening to the stories falling. It was an ace cooldown. Had a singalong to Busted – Year 3000 too which was brilliant.
We got a lot of footage from the night so I’ll probably end up splicing it into a YAWA video blog!
Boyinabizzle!
I made a tutorial for a dirty Electro bassline (check out the loop I made, funky much?
) for boyinaband.com!
That was fun
I also made a plan for my first video update where I’m actually in it – I’ll be trying to get the boyinaband community involved in choosing the tutorials, asking questions and in general putting together a group of people who want to learn how to be better at making electronic music. I think it could be really good.
Along those lines I’ve come up with the idea for a “Seven Day Song” – 7 tutorials spaced out over the week where you build up a song from scratch, different weeks will be different styles of music. I’ve begun work on a Dubstep tutorial which is pretty sweet! I’ll get everyone to upload their creations as video responses when they finish and it’ll bring the community even closer together!
That’s the hope anyway!
Watch Me Fly!
I’ve been talking about this song for ages – my new favourite YAWA song and it’s now up on the myspace for you to check out! Also check out the YAWA update blog on there too which says in more detail what we’ve been up to! What do you think of the song?
Jamie + Dave = freakin’ heavy.
Jamie and I have now got two seriously heavy YAWA songs in the works. We got Kieran’s guitar down on them on sunday and they are so damn good. One, currently codenamed “Nebula”, has this really cool drum and bass metal feel to the intro, then breaks out into the most gorgeous YAWA outro ever. Whilst still being stupidly heavy. I think it’s the first time we thought a riff we wrote could be used by KoRn. The other we concluded could be described as Muse meets Periphery meets Limp Bizkit meets the Matrix soundtrack.
HGD on the track!
I finished recording the last few bits of vocals for Hot Girl Discount’s debut song “Hard to Get (You don’t fool me)”. Scratch, Pete and I also came up with a bunch of ideas for the documentary which are quite ambitious in that we’ll have to organise going to places and filming, which could be a lot of fun!
Next week on Dave’s Blog…
Next week is the show I’ve been organising with Rebolio in Worcester! It’s my first ever organised show so come on down if you can! – Facebook event details. As well as that, I will…
- Release the boyinaband video blog
- Start on the 7 day song
- Get back into my organisational routine
- Try to convince Kieran to move in early ![]()
AND THE BLOGLY QUESTION: What things can you think of that someone putting together a boyband might have to do? I may completely steal your suggestions for use in the HGD documentary
– btw, cheers to the people leaving comments on davidpaulbrown.com, it’s cool having my own site get some interaction!
OMG!! DAVE YOU ARE LIKE AWESOME!
